postheadericon Music cake and Cocktail Cupcakes

So for my flatmates birthday this year I was very busy during the weekend of his birthday with 2 ceilighs in the space of 2 days, very tiring! Therefore I was super rushed with these cakes!

Since he has been into making cocktails and into music I wanted to incorporate them into his cake. I saw some really ace cocktail cupcakes so I got some straws and cocktail umbrellas to try and make them into cocktails. I ended up losing my piping bags so I just put on the icing in a basic way and didn't have time to make all of the fondant toppers but I did make a couple of fondant limes!

I only made 9 cupcakes because I had made a square cake as well. I decided to do a plain design but with the music to happy birthday around the sides of the cake:

Happy

Birthday to You...Happy

Birthday To You...Happy Birthday To Youuu..

Happy Birthday To You!

As a wee extra surprise I decided to make the cake batter tie dye using 5 different colours, although the red and the pink did turn out similar. I forgot to take pictures of the batter before putting the cakes in the oven but this is how they turned out:

Excuse the crumbs!

I didn't get a picture of the cake when it was cut but here's how the cupcakes turned out:

This one turned out a little bit fuzzy but you get the idea!

Doing tie dye in a cake is really fun and looks super awesome once you cut into the cake! I just poured the batter in different corners and the centre of the baking tin, got a spatula and swirled it around a wee bit to make a pattern =) Since the cupcakes are a lot smaller, just layer the different colours of batter in the cupcake liners!

postheadericon Sushi birthday cake (made mainly by Chris! =D)

This cake was made for my best friend Jasmine's 22nd birthday!

I had my exam on the day that wanted to get this cake done by so very stressful! Chris said that he would do a lot of it since I apparantly had to study!
He did the sushi bit, which I thought were so cool and since she was having food at Yo Sushi, it was very appropriate :)

He also made the wee sherlock's hat, bee and the Jasmine flower and made the ebay sign as she loves ebay and the crochet ball! The wee flowers were made using my new flower plunger cutters that got for Christmas, you see the detail too well but they come out looking quite cute I thought :)

Since I only remembered to take a photo once the cake was in the box, I didn't get a chance to photograph the sides which I had written philosophy and film quotes that related to her!

Here is a close up of the sushi board! Since I don't have brown colouring, we tried mixing a couple different colours to get a 'wood' effect, obviously something I will practise more! Didn't Chris do an excellent job with the details of the sushi?! I did make the wasabi green pile though :P

postheadericon Lack of blogging and Chris's 22nd birthday!

Ahh I kind of gave up on the blogging scene but I shall try and keep doing it! Lots of things have been happening since my last post a who half a year ago! Currently in 4th year so everything is GO GO GO but I can't wait until I am finally finished with university :D But during stress of uni, working, moving flats and general life I have managed to keep up my love for cakes :D
1st up is the cake that I made for my amazing boyfriend's, Chris's, 22nd birthday. I organised a surprise day for him; I managed to get his dad and sister to come up from Manchester and they were sat at a table in the Chinese that I took Chris to for his birthday lunch! Later on I had organised a night out with the people who were still in Aberdeen as sadly most of his friends had gone home for the summer :( Despite this however he turned up, we did the 'SURPRISE' and I think that he was indeed surprised :D
The cake was brought out and it was a carrot cake, Chris's favourite. Normally I would do this carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting but Chris is a strange one who doesn't like it so I sticked with a basic buttercream :) Because I was so busy with organising everything, I didn't take good photos before taking the cake to the bar, boo :(
So he is a big fan of snowboarding hence the 'hill' which was supposed to be covered completely in hundreds and thousands as he loves colourful things but they kept falling off, so i did end up giving up hehe. There was a fortune cookie and a chinese plate which is his favourite cuisine. There are 3 different Chris's on the cake; him as a chemist who has just blown something up, kicking as a karate Chris and a snowboarding Chris.

postheadericon Flatmate's 22nd

This was made for my flatmates birthday so I made a 2 tiered cake with all his favourite things; He is always sitting on the couch with a duvet playing computer games and watching tv, some of his favourite foods, letters made in runescape style with an axe and sword from the game, his tattoo of the deathly hallows, juggling balls, diablo, poker chips and cards. These were all made of Marshmallow Fondant as well as the cake although I was not as happy with the fondant on the cake as it wasn't as smooth as I had hoped. The cake was an apple cake which was a bit of an experiment but everyone seemed to like it so shall definitely be using the recipe again!
